Can You Catch More Bass With Attractants?

October 7th, 2009 by admin in Recreation and Sports

It is not uncommon for anglers to exploit the olfactory system of the fish when trying to get a leg up in fishing. Bass in particular are really attracted to a few smells in particular. The main scents or tastes that attract bass include: garlic, salt, and anise plus several other spices.

The bass can actually distinguish between “positive” scents and “negative” scents. So of course, the companies who make fish attractants choose the positive smells to mimic their products after. Of the negative scents that will turn the bass away you have: gasoline, strong odors transferred from your hands to the bait, and even blood from a wounded schoolmate (not to be confused with blood from prey).

Bass are equipped with 2 nostrils on both sides of their head. One set are called the anterior nostrils and the other set are called the posterior nostrils. Water flows into the anterior nostrils, over the olfactory glands, then out again through the posterior nostrils. Approximately 1 200th of a drop of a substance per 100 gallons of water can be detected by the amazing olfactory system of the bass. This is the very reason that a lot of anglers will clean their hands before they begin fishing, ridding them of any strong odors. Additionally, it is the reason that they will add attractants to their lures.

Although it is an important factor when bass fishing, scent is not on top of the list like it is with other fish like carp and catfish. Bass are known to hang onto a bait up to 30 seconds longer when a positive scent is present.

Lots of tackle and bait shops carry different attractant products as well as bass lures that already have a scent attached. The list of the top manufacturers for attractants include: Berkley, Basswax, Liquid Lure, Mega Strike, Mr. Goop, Dr. Juice and many others.

One of my favorite attractants isn’t a spray like most are, it is in a tube like chap stick and contains beeswax. Being that it is waxy, rather than liquid, it stays on the lure longer and there are no spills to worry about. Basswax is the manufacturer I purchase from for the beeswax product.

Bass Fishing In A Private Pond Is Ideal – So How Do You Get Permission?

September 8th, 2009 by admin in Recreation and Sports

Is your favourite fishing hole losing its appeal? Competing with other eager fishermen begins long before the reeling begins. First, there’s a rush for arriving to the lake earlier than everyone else, then, another rush, trying to grab your favorite or best spot. It’s true! Ever thought about private ponds for bass fishing? But how would you go about getting permission to fish at the private ponds?

It’s worth the challenge. Land owners may be a bit suspicious of you, but who can blame them. No one, especially a property owner, appreciates trespassers and litterbugs. It’s best not to come on too strong when you talk to the owner of a private pond. You should be congenial and show a good amount of admiration of the person’s efforts and rights to privacy. Assure them you are not going to trash their property and will be quiet and respectful while you are there. Don’t be picky about the time and dates that they offer the private fishing pond to you. Even if they have worked out a time with you, it’s always safer to announce your arrival once you get there.

Always ask them if there is a certain area they would prefer you park in. You don’t want to be a nuisance, be sure to respect their privacy, and, always be understanding, there may be times they will have to ask you not to come – even though it was pre-arranged. If they are very negative and give you an out and out no, thank them for their time.

You never know when you might see them again and because you handled it well this time they may say yes the next time. If they say yes ask them if you can bring other people and can keep the fish you catch. Ask them if they could show you around the property. Who knows they could have 2000 acres with 40 ponds. They may even know of other property owners with ponds that would not mind if others fished their pond. Always leave the property the same way you found it.

Don’t leave any debris lying about the land or water. Offer the owners some fish, cleaned of course. Think for a moment, if it were your own property, how you would expect visitors to treat your land. You may even want to go as far as keeping in touch with the owner asking them if there is anything you can do for them or send them a card at Christmas just to keep in touch. Following these techniques will avoid any frustrations.

What are you waiting for? Isn’t it time you find that perfect private fishing pond, relax, and tie on one of your favourite topwater bass lures?

Topwater Fishing For Bass

August 17th, 2009 by admin in Recreation and Sports

There is a wide variety of prey that these ravenous predators hunt down, so fishing lure companies have to cover a lot of area when creating artificial fishing lures. There are several things that have to be taken into account when dreaming up a fishing lure. Important aspects include, the colour of the prey the fish are hunting, the glean from the sun and how it affects visibility, the time of day and year the lure will be fished, among many other things.

There comes a giant list of lure sizes, colours and types when looking at all the possible fishing scenarios. According to this bass fishing lure resource, there are soft and hard bodied lures, topwater lures, bottom baits and suspended lures. Not to mention all of the subcategories for these lures. I’ll discuss one of the all time bass fishing faves, topwater fishing and topwater lures.

As probably expected, topwater lures float and are fished along the surface of the water. Most topwaters have lips attached or cupped heads to create loud splashing or popping sounds when jerked. The surface sounds will entice bass from great distances.

Bass love to hide under cover such as lily pads and other structure, so that is a great spot to cast these topwaters. The lure is then pulled with short jerks and pauses. When the bass hits it is an amazing rush, as you not only feel the hit, but you can see and hear it as well! More often that note, the bass will jump clear out of the water.

Topwaters are most often fished in the morning and evening in shallow waters.

Some of the popular topwaters include:

  • the Jitterbug
  • the Heddon Zara Spook
  • Manns Rat
  • the Crazy Crawler

So, tie on a topwater, head to a close by fishing spot and hook some bass. Good fishing!
