Preparing Yourself for Emergency Situations

July 31st, 2009 by admin in Recreation and Sports

Natural disasters, wars, “terrorist” attacks, virus outbreaks are everywhere. Time will tell which of these you will experience because these disasters are an inescapable part of the world. There is nothing we can do to stop a major disaster from happening but we can make preparations for it. The following tips will help you prepare for almost anything that comes your way.

1. Draw Up an Emergency Plan
The best thing you can do to prepare for an emergency is planning. Your plan has to cater for any situation you can think of. Plan your gear, escape route, etc and put your survival gear where you can quickly grab it. Keeping a small survival pack in your car helps you deal with disasters if they happen while you’re on the road. Make sure everyone involved knows what the plan.

2. Build a Complete First Aid Kit
Ready made medical emergency kits are a good place to start but be sure to keep building your kit until it is complete. Try the professional version of the emergency kit. It’s still not complete but it’s a very good place to start with.

If there are three of you and then there’s only one set of bandages, add 2 or more to the kit. You can’t be “too ready” for an emergency situation. Always buy extra bandages and antiseptic wipes for better protection.

3. First Aid Training
There are a lot of courses you can take to train yourself to become proficient in using the medical kit you built. To help you gain knowledge, courses on CPR, First Aid and AED are offered by the Red Cross. Add to base knowledge things like injury prevention and community disaster. If you learn these skills you might save a life.

4. Stock Up Your Drinking Water Supply
Water is critical for survival because you’re not likely to survive long without water. Use durable containers that don’t easily puncture to store the water and replace the water every three months. If you expect a disaster to come in the near future then fill up on your water storage.

The European Union have announced that it will ban the supply and sale of iodine for use in disinfecting drinking water. It will no longer be an option for many people.

5. Save Up Some Food
Buy food with packaging that is not easily punctured and some self-heating food. You are going to eventually run out of propane bottles for a portable camp stove so you might not be able to heat up your food all the time. If you prepared well, you’ll have no problem getting wood fire to heat up your food.

6. Cooking
Access to a stove may prove difficult in a emergency situation. I recommend propane stoves because they’re easy to use. To help your body regulate your temperature in cold weather and to keep your body nourished you need hot food. Hot food nourishes your body and help regulate your temperature during cold weather so make sure you have a camp stove as part of your emergency kit. Remember to have plenty of fuel as well.

7. Replacement Lights
The chances of you loosing power are better than average, especially in tornadoes and hurricanes. If you’re using an electric lantern, be sure to stock up on batteries. Light sticks are great for emergency lighting. LED lights give out light for a very long time as it doesn’t require much power. Glowing sticks are another good option because they don’t require any batteries.

8. Emergency Tool Kit
Depending on the situation, you might need some tools to accomplish some stuff like cut wood for fuel, make repairs, dig a hole etc. A multi-tool may be able to do a lot of stuff but it may not up to the task for some stuff.

9. Emergency Radio
In any type of natural emergency, you need to be able to keep up with the news and weather reports. Radios are an age-old tradition, but technology has made them even more versatile for emergencies. It’s important that an emergency radio can still play even without power e.g. a wind-up radio.

10. Guides
Survival and foraging guides aren’t just for survivalists. Foraging can be a deadly game of chance if you don’t know what’s safe and what isn’t.

Find New Mexico Attractions at the Ballooning Capital of the World

Discover New Mexico Vacations at the Ballooning Capital of the World

When you are wanting to make your plans for your New Mexico travel vacation getaway be sure to include a visit at Albuquerque to experience the Ballooning Capital of the World! You will have to be present the first full week of October while the Balloon Fiesta is going on. For nine straight days there are balloons flying over the sky of Albuquerque in a bright display of the more than 700 balloons that enter the event.

With over three hundred resident balloonists living in the Albuquerque region everyone will be able to observe balloons throughout your visit. In fact, you can probably book a excursion to go up on one from one of the various operators in the region and see the wonder of the city from the sky.

If you arrive for the Balloon Fiesta be sure to stay around in the dusk hours so you can see Balloon “Glowdeos”. This is where the balloonists’ fire up their propane burners to inflate the balloons against the dark sky which leaves the whole sky aglow with psychedelic light bulbs! There are also different shapes of some of the balloons that you will appreciate seeing. There are dinosaurs, bumble bees, flowers, a stage coach and cow jumping over the moon. They all go up in a mass ascension of “special shape rodeos” for your thrill.

While you are in the city be sure to take a tour of the International Balloon Museum one of the best New Mexico attractions. You will have an opportunity to learn about ballooning, the theory, culture, history, sport and art of the flights while you are visiting the Center. It’s easy to get to since it is right on the edge of the field.

The cost of admission is reasonable so you won’t have to select just one event, you will be able to attend many and always have enough cash to eat while at the park. There are food vendors throughout the area to take care of your hunger needs while you are there.

Because you are going to be there in October you are going to need a jacket for the mornings. It will be approximately 40 degrees throughout the morning flights and warm up to approximately 70 as the day goes on. Dress in layers to be able to shed some when you get to hot. Be sure to use sunscreen with you since are at a high altitude and there is a risk for sunburn. Wear comfy shoes, you will be on your feet and standing a lot so might as well be comfortable. You should bring lawn chairs onto the field, unlike a number of events today. If you bring a large backpack with “treasures” be prepared to have it inspected before you enter the event.

This is a fabulous activity so make sure you plan to attend. Remember that a New Mexico vacation can be more than looking at museums and canyons; you can also look to the sky!

Ski France In Style At The Courcheval 1850 Resort

July 31st, 2009 by admin in Recreation and Sports

The Courchevel 1850 resort in France is one of the best ski resorts in the world if you happen to be a beginner. Yes, we were all beginners once, and no one knows better than the Courchevel 1850 resort, that if you get the beginners right, the intermediates and advanced will follow. With over 50% of all runs dedicated specifically to beginners, it is a haven for those learning to ski, or looking to refine their skills and expertise whilst on vacation. Go to Sports Holidays for more information

Rumored to be the most expensive resort on the French Alps, this isn’t strictly the truth. You can find really good deals if you know where to look, and there are really good discounts for group bookings, although you get what you pay for, so don’t expect a cheap vacation. Courchevel is part of the Three Valleys resorts, and itself is divided into four distinct areas from the bottom to the top: 1300, 1550, 1650, and 1850.

In general, the further up you go, the more expensive your trip is likely to be, so it is wise to consider going slightly further down, where you can still find some amazing skiing, both off piste and cross country, as well as some great downhill runs. With an astonishing 65 ski lifts across the resort, the Courchevel is an enormous skiing resort, and attracts a wide variety of tourists from across Europe, and indeed the world. Refer to Tailor Made Holidays for more information.

The Courchevel 1300 is located right at the very bottom of the resort, and is truly beautiful in an unspoilt, picturesque sense. It is a fantastic challenge for beginners, and is ideal for those looking for some relaxation out of their skiing vacation. Alternatively, moving up, there is the 1550, which is seen as the playground of the locals.

Here you can benefit from some amazing self catering deals, whilst still managing to find great skiing, so this is perhaps a good consideration for those with families. Again, moving up there is the 1650, home of the famous ski school, and a number of top quality restaurants. With largely chalet accommodation, this is also a great resort to choose for your French skiing vacation. Finally we have the 1850.

The 1850 is home to the rich and the famous, and you’re looking at an arm and a leg if you want to ski there. Although the skiing isn’t that much better (unless you’re looking for off-piste), there are heftier queues, and the resort isn’t overly child friendly or family orientated.

Of the four resorts on the Courchevel, you are guaranteed to have a great skiing vacation whichever you choose. Each has the benefit of world class skiing, although the facilities may differ between each. It is important to decide what it is you are looking for, and then to base your choice around this, so you can make the most of your skiing vacation. Why not consider taking a few lessons in the world famous Courchevel ski school? Or how about sampling some of the extensive night life these resorts have to offer?

Whether you are a dedicated skier, or have never been on a pair of skis in your life, you are sure to find exactly what you are looking for on the Courchevel, and you are guaranteed a vacation to remember. Visit Group Sport Holidays for further information.

Mexican Recipes Make Economical and Terrific Summertime Menus!

July 30th, 2009 by admin in Food and Drink

Here in the U.S., we enjoy a diversity of regional ethnic cuisines. One of the most popular of these originates in Mexico. In America, many Mexican recipes have evolved into what we know as Southwestern or Tex-Mex cookery. Typically, ingredients are inexpensive, the dishes are filling and packed with sensational flavor. These hot and spicy meals are terrific at the summertime table, helping to bring cooling relief from that droopy feeling on the hottest of summer days.

Mexican food is characterized by spicy seasoning and combinations which use rice, beans and plenty of veggies. Mexican recipes use generous amounts of cheese, while meat is generally used more sparingly than in the conventional American meat-and-potatoes menu. The meat and cheese provide plenty of protein and the other ingredients assure you get your fiber and veggies in a one-dish meal.

When you think of Mexican recipes, enchiladas and tacos probably come first to mind. However, Mexican cuisine is much more diverse. For example, if you’re planning a breakfast or brunch party, try a spicy omelet, filled with jalapenos, cheddar, onions and olives, topped off with a good dollop of salsa and sour cream. For lunch, a layered salad of shredded lettuce, julienned chicken, jicama, olives, guacamole and salsa is a delicious treat in the heat of the day. Chile rellenos is another popular recipe that serves as an excellent side dish or entree. Authentic chile rellenos is made with fresh jalapenos, halved and then seeded, baked in a mixture of beaten eggs and jack cheese.

As with many ethnic cuisines, flavor is everything and less is more. Judicious use of meats, diverse vegetable flavors and textures, along with bright and spicy seasoning means you get a lot of taste satisfaction at very little expense.

Another advantage to a menu centered on Mexican recipes is that many such dishes are natural do-aheads. This makes for easy summertime entertaining. Meats may be cooked and seasoned in advance, held in the frig overnight or frozen for use on an impromptu basis. Enchiladas may be prepared to be oven-ready, then frozen, well ahead of party day. On the day before serving, thaw overnight. Pop them in a baking dish, pour on your sauce and bake.

In case you’re wondering how hot and spicy dishes can serve to cool you in sweltering heat, here’s how that works: the hot seasonings, such as cayenne pepper and spicy ingredients like jalapenos and salsas, cause you to perspire, prompting your body to cool naturally.

You may have had the experience of dipping a corn chip into an authentically burning-hot salsa. That’s when you reach for the beer! For kids, a glass of milk does the trick as well. You’ll feel cool and comfortable and your mouth won’t be on fire.

Next time you’re having a summertime gathering in hot weather, think Mexican recipes. Do-ahead, budget friendly, festive and delicious!

Learning About Wakeboard and Waterskiing

July 30th, 2009 by admin in Recreation and Sports

Wakeboarding And Waterskiing- Many Likenesses But Even More Differences

There are many similarities and many differences between wakeboarding and waterskiing. Let us take a look at some of them.

Some of the likenesses between the 2 sports include:
Both are water sports. This is a no-brainer!
Both involve an individual attached to a motor ship by a cable or a rope and being pulled by the same.
Both involve surfing the water with smooth objects fitted to the feet of the individual.
Both are glamorous sports where emphasis is not just on surfing the water but on performing tricks as well. In truth, tricks form the heart and soul of the sport. Whether an individual is a professional in wakeboarding or waterskiing is dependent on the talents and tricks that he or she is able of performing.
Both are inclusive sports where intense competition does not stop people from helping one another out in the various aspects of the sport.Wakeboarding

On the other hand, there are a lot of differences between the 2 sports. The first and most obvious distinction is the wakeboarding is a variant of waterskiing. The second has been about for more than eighty years today while the former is a comparatively very recent phenomenon. Wakeboarding is a mixture of water skiing, snowboarding and surfing. The sport has borrowed the concept of being pulled by a motor ship powered by a cable from water skiing. It has borrowed the theory of employing a board instead of skis from snowboarding. It has borrowed the entire idea of creating a wake from the motor ship to surf the same from surfing. It’s a mish mash sport that has been made by the aggregate of cutting edge concepts and enhancements in technology.

The presence of long and cumbersome skis makes it very difficult to perform different types of stunts in this sport. Instead, the individual is prohibited to a limited number of stunts. On the other hand, wakeboarding offers a load more scope. The difference is as vast as the difference between snow skiing and snowboarding. The recognition of wakeboarding has donated tons to the recognition of water sports. It is augmented its appeal amongst the youth.

The creation of the wake by a motor ship has had a big effect on the recognition of the sport. This has gave the chance for even people who don’t live on the coast to enjoy water sports. All one has to do is get a motorboat that is robust enough to form a massive wake and one shall have a wave right in the middle of the lake. All one has to do is ride the wake and perform tricks and stunts when riding the turbulence. Wakeboarding

The sport of wakeboarding is performed on a board which is absolutely different as compared to the skis. Further, there is just a single board and not 2 units as is the case in water skiing. The sport of wakeboarding has led to its own variants like wake surfing and wake skating.Wakeboarding

Ways to Enjoy the Outdoors

July 30th, 2009 by admin in Recreation and Sports

Being Outdoors is something we can all enjoy. A little fresh air can be helpful to anyone. Indoors can be fun and entertaining, but you should get out even if just occasionally We didn’t even have computers until the eighties, so people used to have to entertain themselves in other ways. Everyone should take a break to have a little time outside. You don’t need to take a run, or a day-long trip to the mountains, but just getting outdoors is very important. If you enjoy a little excitement, doing things like Little Miami River canoeing and kayaking is a lot of fun. Little Miami River kayaking can be a great way to mix up a humdrum routine of office work during the week and gardening on the weekends. It can be a fun, and somewhat nerve racking experience if it is your first time. It is an awesome way to bring families together and enjoy the nature around us.

If you are going to spend a day on the water, you definitely need to do a few things. If you don’t prepare yourself in the right way, you may find yourself very hungry, wet, and sun burnt. Always bring a lunch or snacks. Water activities burn a good amount of calories and you will be hungry come lunch time. You may not expect how draining it can be. Your face and arms and part of your legs will all be exposed to the sun. If you don’t put on suntan lotion, you will be very pink. Also, you will want to pack all of your things in a water proof container. A gallon sized plastic bag should do the trick or you could go the extra mile and buy a water-proof bag. There are many different activities outside that don’t involve water. Hiking is one of these many different outdoor sports. All you need is a place to hike and some minor equipment. I suggest getting hiking shoes but sneakers would also work fine. Depending on what type of hiking you are planning on doing and how serious you are about it, you may want to get a backpack to carry with you. If you are going to be going on a long strenuous hike, you will want a place to store plenty of water, snack and sunscreen. Also, always take a cell phone and back up phone with you on major hiking excursions. Some people may also advise you to take a GPS or compass, but that is only relevant if you are going to stray into the unmarked wild.

Everyone can find a niche outside. Whether it is walking, running, hiking, or being in the water; there is an activity for everyone. You may enjoy the exercise aspect of it, or beauty of being in the outdoors. Birdwatchers and extreme mountain climbers are perfect examples of people who love the outdoors.
